Evia Weather and Seasons

Evia is a long island with mountains, a gulf side and an Aegean side, so the weather depends on where you are. This page gives the September averages for Chalkida and the seasonal rules that shape a trip.

Evia weather at a glance

Evia stretches north to south along the Greek mainland. Dirfys rises to 1,743 m, the north faces a gulf, Kymi sits on the Aegean side and Karystos lies near Mount Ochi in the south. One forecast cannot cover all of that, so look up the weather for the town or trail you plan to visit.

The long-term figures below are for September in Chalkida. Use them as a guide for the central part of the island, not as a value for every beach or village. If your plans depend on good conditions, such as a boat trip or a hike, read our Evia tours and day trips and keep a spare day in the schedule.

The station stands at 200 m above sea level, not on the shore, so readings at the waterfront can differ. These are averages. Single years, and single days, can be warmer, cooler or wetter.

Our pick: a day at sea

A full day on a fishing boat suits settled weather, so ask when you book how the weather affects the departure.

How the weather differs across the island

Plan by area, not by island.

The northern gulf

Limni and Edipsos face the northern Evian Gulf. The ferry from Arkitsa to Loutra Edipsou and the one from Glyfa to Agiokampos depend on sea conditions, so check the day's sailings when the forecast is rough.

Chalkida and Eretria

The centre is the easiest part of the island to reach and the easiest to plan around the weather. Chalkida has museums and a fortress, and Eretria has a museum and an ancient site. The current in the Euripus strait changes direction about every 6 hours, with irregular changes on some days of the month. It is a feature to watch, not a daily timetable.

The Aegean coast and Kymi

Kymi is the harbour on the Aegean side. Do not assume calm water or no wind on this coast. For the ferry to Skyros, check the current timetable and the weather on the day.

Mountains and gorge

Hiking trails near Steni on the slopes of Dirfys, and the long Dimosari route of about 10 km, depend on the weather and on the state of the path. A beautiful forecast does not prove that a trail is open or safe. Read the conditions before you set out.

The south

Karystos lies by the sea with Mount Ochi behind it. Do not assume that mountain roads and unpaved tracks are passable. Ask locally before you drive up.

In summer, authorities announce days of very high fire risk on Evia. Follow the civil protection notices and the advice of local people on those days.

Ferry crossings and timetables also change with the season. Be at the port 30 to 60 minutes early on the Arkitsa and Glyfa routes. On the Rafina to Marmari route, passengers should arrive 30 minutes early and vehicles 1 hour early. Our guide to getting to Evia from Athens has the fares.

Evia weather: frequently asked questions

What is the weather like in Evia in September?

In Chalkida the average daily high is 28.7 °C and the average low is 20.3 °C, with 26.5 mm of rain over the month. The figures cover 2011 to 2024. Other parts of the island can differ.

When is the best time to visit Evia?

That depends on what you want to do. The archaeological museums keep the same hours in summer and winter, the Karababa fortress opens fewer days from November to March, and the public thermal bath runs only in its summer season. Match the month to your list of sights.

Is the weather the same across the whole island?

No. The island has mountains up to 1,743 m, a northern gulf, an Aegean coast and a southern tip. Check the forecast for the place you will be in on the day.

Do ferries to Evia run in bad weather?

Sailings depend on sea conditions and on the season's timetable. Check the day's departures before you drive to the port, and arrive early with a vehicle.

Can I rely on the museum hours in winter?

The Chalkida and Eretria museums list the same hours in winter as in summer. Karababa is the exception: from 1 November to 31 March it opens Friday to Sunday only. They close on 1 January, 25 March, 1 May, Easter Sunday and 25 and 26 December.
