Limni at a glance
Limni is a coastal village on the northern Euboean Gulf. It has neoclassical houses along the waterfront and a harbour that gives the place its character. The village is a good base for the north of Evia, with the monastery of Galataki nearby and the waterfalls of Drymonas in the region.
It is a long way from Athens. By car over the high bridge, the distance is 154 km and about 2 hours 34 minutes one way, so plan at least a night here instead of a rushed day. For other ways to see the north, take a look at our Evia tours and day trips.

What to see in and around Limni
The village, a monastery and a waterfall.
The seafront and harbour
Walk along the waterfront past the neoclassical houses and out to the harbour. It is the easy way to get a feel for the place, and it needs no booking or ticket.
Galataki monastery
The monastery of Agios Nikolaos Galataki is home to a community of nuns. To ask about a visit, call +30 22270 31489. Check visiting hours and dress guidance by phone or in Limni before you set out. Treat it as a place of worship and a home.
The road to Galataki
Reach the monastery on the road from Limni. Some alternative forest tracks have poor and dangerous sections, so do not take a shortcut through the forest.
Drymonas waterfalls
The Drymonas falls are connected with Limni and the north of Evia. Whether you can reach them, swim or find water running depends on the season, so check locally before you plan around them.

Beaches and swimming near Limni
Limni sits on the coast, so swimming is part of the picture. Conditions vary by day and by spot, so look at the water and ask locally for a place that suits you.
The 2026 Blue Flag awards on the island coast went to Lefkandi, Venus, Kokkini and Kremala. Those are awards for single beaches and say nothing about the others. Our Evia beaches guide covers the island as a whole.

The 2021 fire in the north
What to know for a visit.
In August 2021 a large wildfire hit north Evia. The burned area grew from 7,313 ha to 50,909 ha between 5 and 11 August. A state reconstruction programme is under way, with a section on forests. Do not expect the forests on the road to Limni to match older photos, and do not assume any particular path is open.
Treat forest roads and trails with care, and follow local advice. Our Evia weather page explains the seasons.
Getting to Limni and where to stay
North of Chalkida.
Athens to Chalkida is 78.9 km and about 1 hour 28 minutes, and Limni is further up the coast. The Evia bus company KTEL serves the island, so check its current timetable. A rental car gives you the flexibility to reach the monastery and nearby coast. Read Athens to Evia and our page on car rental from Athens Airport before you decide, and see where to stay on Evia for the northern area. Hot springs are close by in Edipsos, and the shrine at Prokopi is also in the north.
How long to stay
A realistic plan for the north.
One night
Enough for the seafront in the evening, a morning call to the monastery if the nuns welcome visitors, and a drive back along the coast.
Two or three nights
Add Edipsos and its hot springs, which are 127 km from Chalkida, and the shrine at Prokopi. That pace suits the long distances better than a daily change of base.
Season
Check the season before you go. The north is quieter outside summer, and the weather decides which roads and paths you can use.
