Things to do in Evia at a glance
Evia is long and hilly, so the best way to plan is by region. The north has Limni, Edipsos and Prokopi. The middle has Chalkida, Eretria, Steni and the Dirfys mountain. The south has Karystos, Mount Ochi, the dragon houses and the Dimosari Gorge. Kymi, on the Aegean side, is the harbor for boats to Skyros.
Allow time for the roads. From Chalkida it is 127 km to Edipsos, about 2 hours 25 minutes, and 118 km to Karystos, about 2 hours 35 minutes. Those are route estimates, not live traffic. Prices below are for 2026, in euros, and they change.

North Evia: Limni, Edipsos and Prokopi
Seafront villages, hot springs and a pilgrimage site.
Limni
A coastal village on the northern Gulf of Evia with neoclassical houses and a harbor. From Athens it is 154 km, about 2 hours 34 minutes via the high bridge.
Limni →Galataki monastery
The monastery of Agios Nikolaos near Limni is home to a community of nuns. Use the road from Limni and avoid shortcuts on forest tracks, some of which are in poor condition.
Edipsos hot springs
Thermal water meets the sea at Loutra Edipsou. The public bath runs from 6 July to 31 October in the 2026 season, daily 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the outdoor pool at €9 per person. Some groups pay a reduced €6.
Edipsos →Drymonas waterfalls
The waterfalls lie in the north of the island near Limni. Ask locally about the road and the path before you go, and do not plan on swimming there.
Prokopi
The shrine of Saint John the Russian is a pilgrimage site in the north of the island. Saint John's feast day is 27 May. Ask on site about opening times.
Prokopi →Central Evia: Chalkida, Eretria, Steni and Kymi
The easiest part of the island to reach from Athens.
Chalkida
The island capital lies on both sides of the Euripus strait. Walk the waterfront, see the two bridges and visit Karababa fortress and the archaeological museums.
Chalkida →Eretria
A town on the southern Gulf of Evia, opposite Oropos, with a seafront promenade, a harbor and a museum of finds from Eretria, Amarynthos and Lefkandi. The theater can no longer be entered.
Eretria →Steni and Mount Dirfys
Steni lies on the slopes of Dirfys, and walking paths lead toward the mountain refuge. The mountain is a protected area, but not a national park with a ticket gate. Ask locally about the paths before you set out.
Kymi
A harbor town on the Aegean side. Boats to the island of Skyros leave from here. Check fares and times for your date.
The Chalkida museums, the Eretria museum and the Karababa fortress are closed on Tuesday. The table further down gives times and prices.
South Evia: Karystos, Mount Ochi and the dragon houses
Mountains, a harbor town and dry-stone buildings.
Karystos
A coastal town with a harbor, neoclassical buildings and Mount Ochi behind it. From Chalkida it is 118 km.
Karystos →Bourtzi
The sea fortress next to Karystos is a landmark to see from the waterfront. Ask locally whether it can be visited.
Dragon houses
Dry-stone buildings with overlapping roofs stand in southern Evia. Research since 2020 links two of the studied buildings to antiquity through pottery, and their purpose is still being studied.
Mount Ochi
The mountain behind Karystos is a protected area. Mountain roads and paths vary in condition, so ask locally before you drive up.
Dimosari Gorge
A 10 km route from Petrokanalo to Kalliana. It is a long hike that ends far from where it begins.
Dimosari Gorge →Marmari
The port where the ferry from Rafina arrives. A passenger ticket costs €12 in 2026, and the crossing takes about 1 hour.
