How Evia tours work
Evia tours are built around a few themes: the bridges and the fortress of Chalkida, the museum and ancient remains of Eretria, the hot springs of Edipsos, and the south around Karystos and the Dimosari Gorge. Which one fits depends mostly on distance. Chalkida is 78.9 km from Athens, about 1 hour 28 minutes by car. Karystos is 191 km via the high bridge, about 3 hours 29 minutes. Both figures are one way and driving time only, not the length of a tour.
That is why the middle of the island works as a day trip from Athens, while the north and the south are easier with a night on the island. For each tour, check three things: the date, the meeting point and what the price covers.

Our picks: guided days on Evia
The Eretria tour is the short culture option at three hours, with the museum ticket included. The four private tours (dragon houses, two gorge hikes and a mountain trek) include transfers from the central coast, and the island tour by bus covers the most ground in ten hours.

Evia excursion themes compared
Distances are one way and driving time only.
| Theme | Base | Getting there | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bridges, fortress, museums | Chalkida | From Athens 78.9 km, 1 h 28 min | Karababa is free; museums €5 to €10 in 2026 |
| Ancient town and museum | Eretria | Ferry from Oropos, 20 minutes | Museum €5; theater cannot be entered |
| Hot springs | Edipsos | From Chalkida 127 km, 2 h 25 min | Outdoor pool €9 in the 2026 season |
| Monastery and village | Limni | From Athens 154 km, 2 h 34 min | Galataki monastery near the village |
| Harbor town, mountain, dragon houses | Karystos | From Athens 191 km, 3 h 29 min | Plan a night on the island |
| Gorge hike | South Evia | – | 10 km route; plan a full day |
For most visitors with one day from Athens, Chalkida on its own, or Chalkida with Eretria, is the realistic choice. Edipsos, Limni and Karystos work better with a night on the island.
The excursion types in detail
What each one involves.
Chalkida: bridges, current and fortress
The old bridge is an electrically moved sliding bridge, and the high bridge is cable-stayed. Karababa fortress is free to enter. The Arethousa museum costs €10 (€5 reduced), the older archaeological museum €5 (€3 reduced). Most are closed on Tuesday.
Chalkida →Eretria: museum and ancient remains
The museum shows finds from Eretria, Amarynthos and Lefkandi. The West Quarter and the mosaic house pavilion can be visited during museum hours. The key for the pavilion is at the museum.
Eretria →Edipsos: thermal springs
The public bath is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. from 6 July to 31 October 2026, outdoor pool only. The springs where hot water meets the sea are a separate matter from the paid bath.
Edipsos →Karystos and the south
Karystos has a harbor, neoclassical buildings and Mount Ochi behind it. Dragon houses are dry-stone buildings with overlapping roofs. Their purpose and age are still being studied, so treat them as a landscape stop.
Karystos →Dimosari Gorge hike
The route runs 10 km from Petrokanalo, at about 950 m, to Kalliana on the coast. Plan about 5 hours of walking and 9 to 11 hours in total with transport. It ends far from the start, so the return needs planning. Ask locally about the current state of the trail.
Dimosari Gorge →Limni and the north
Limni is a seafront village with neoclassical houses and a harbor. Galataki monastery lies nearby. Use the road from Limni and avoid shortcuts on forest tracks, which can be rough.
Limni →What to check before you book
The details matter more than the headline price.
Date, product and meeting point
Check that the date, the product and the meeting place match, and what the price includes. Offers can change with the season.
Closing days
The museums in Chalkida and Eretria and the Karababa fortress are closed on Tuesday. From 1 November to 31 March, Karababa opens only Friday to Sunday. All close on 1 January, 25 March, 1 May, Easter Sunday, 25 December and 26 December.
Ferries
Passengers should be at the port 30 minutes before departure on the Rafina to Marmari route and vehicles 1 hour before. Fares in 2026 are €12 per passenger and €27 or €30 for a car. Check the current timetable before you go.
Getting there →Your own car
A car makes the north and south far easier. The bridges in Chalkida mean you do not need a ferry to reach the island.
Car rental from Athens Airport →Weather and the trail
Heavy rain can change plans for hikes and for crossings by sea. Check the forecast the day before and ask your guide or host about the trail.

Evia tours: frequently asked questions
Can I visit Evia as a day trip from Athens?
Yes, for the middle of the island. Chalkida is 78.9 km from Athens, about 1 hour 28 minutes by car. Karystos in the south is 191 km, about 3 hours 29 minutes one way, so a night there is easier.
Which parts of Evia are too far for one day?
Edipsos is 127 km and about 2 hours 25 minutes from Chalkida, and Karystos is 118 km and 2 hours 35 minutes from Chalkida. Both are long drives, so a night on the island makes them easier.
Are the museums open on Tuesday?
No. The Chalkida and Eretria museums are closed on Tuesday, and so is Karababa fortress from 1 April to 31 October. Plan your Evia day for another weekday.
How long is the Dimosari Gorge hike?
The route is 10 km. Plan about 5 hours of walking and 9 to 11 hours in total once transport is included. See the Dimosari Gorge page.
Do I need a car to see Evia?
Not for Chalkida, which has direct trains from Athens. For Edipsos, Limni and Karystos a car is far more practical. See car rental from Athens Airport.
